History of our school

Our school is named after Gilbert Hitchcock. Gilbert Monell Hitchcock was born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 18, 1859, to the son of former Nebraska senator Phineas Hitchcock and his wife Annie. Gilbert later earned a law degree from the University of Michigan and then began the Omaha World-Herald in July of 1889. He became interested in politics and served a total of 18 years in Congress, including two terms in the Senate. Gilbert returned to Omaha to continue running the paper and was active in the civic affairs of Omaha. An annual scholarship is still awarded in his memory by the Omaha World-Herald to outstanding graduates of Omaha high schools. Mr. Hitchcock died on Feb. 3rd, 1934, and is buried in Omaha, Nebraska.
